These nipples are designed as a reducer with the outside diameter of one side different than that of the other—these are either broached (diameter increased by inserting a punch to enlarge) or swaged, (diameter reduced by drawing the pipe down to a smaller size). Both sides are male threads (when one side is female thread, the part is called an Extension Piece).
